After Labor Day in Myrtle Beach: What Changes on the Beach—and What Does Not

Labor Day may mark a seasonal shift, but it does not create one set of rules for every Grand Strand beach. Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, and unincorporated Horry County each publish their own regulations. Use this guide as a starting point, then check the official link for the beach where you plan to set up.

1. Dogs and bicycles: the city or town matters

Myrtle Beach city limits

In the City of Myrtle Beach, the day after Labor Day through April 30 is the off-season window when dogs and bicycles are allowed on the beach and Boardwalk at any time. Dogs must stay on a leash no longer than seven feet, and owners must clean up after them. During the May 1 through Labor Day period, the City lists more limited beach and Boardwalk hours. 1

North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach uses a different summer schedule. The City lists dog and bicycle restrictions from May 15 through Labor Day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it also lists a seven-foot leash limit for dogs. 2

Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach prohibits dogs on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 1 through Labor Day. Outside that window, dogs are allowed when leashed. The Town also prohibits fires and grills on the beach at all times. 3

Unincorporated Horry County beaches

Horry County lists a May 1 through Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. restriction for animals and bicycles on its beach areas. County rules also require a handheld leash no longer than seven feet and owner cleanup for animals. 4

2. Shade devices: do not assume every beach follows the same calendar

In Myrtle Beach city limits, the City says the umbrellas-only rule runs in 2026 from Memorial Day through the day after Labor Day. Outside that period, non-umbrella shade devices under 12 by 12 feet are allowed under the City guidance. 5

Horry County uses a different, year-round standard. Its beach page limits most shade devices to circular umbrellas up to 7 feet 6 inches in diameter and small pop-up or inflatable cabanas for very small children. County rules also require devices to be secured and not obstruct lifeguards. 4

North Myrtle Beach publishes separate seasonal shade-device rules, while Surfside Beach provides a dedicated shade-device page. Check the applicable municipal page before bringing a tent, cabana, or oversized umbrella. 2 3

3. Parking changes later than beach-access rules

Parking schedules are separate from beach-access rules and apply only to the public systems named by each government. In Myrtle Beach, city-metered spaces remain paid through September 30, 2026; the current seasonal-free program begins October 1 in the specified downtown and oceanfront city-metered areas. Private lots are not part of that city-metered policy. 6

North Myrtle Beach states that its 2026 paid parking season runs March 1 through October 31. 7 Surfside Beach states that paid parking in its public lots continues through October 31, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 8

4. Lifeguard coverage is location-specific

Coverage varies by beach area and operator. Horry County states that lifeguards are required along parts of its beaches from May 15 through September 15. 4 In the heart of Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach Surf Rescue says its own lifeguards can be found from mid-April until late September. 9 Lack’s Beach Service publishes different stated end dates for its City of Myrtle Beach and county operations. 10

The practical takeaway is simple: before relying on a lifeguard stand, check the operator for the exact beach access you plan to use.

5. Rules that still apply after Labor Day

A quieter beach does not remove year-round safety and conduct rules. Myrtle Beach city guidance continues to prohibit alcohol, glass containers, beach fires, dune damage, holes deeper than two feet, and certain water activity near piers. 1 Horry County also says beach items such as chairs, floats, and shade devices may not be left out overnight. 4

Plan the right beach day

The day after Labor Day can bring easier dog walks, changing shade-device options, and a more relaxed pace—but only when the rules match the specific section of coast you are visiting.
