First Bike Week? Here's What to Know Before You Roll Into Myrtle Beach

Rally week after dark.

Never done a Myrtle Beach bike rally before? Good — you're in for a hell of a week. But a little straight talk before you roll in will save you money, time, and at least one headache.

Here's the stuff first-timers always wish somebody told them.

There's no gate fee. No wristband. No ticket.

This isn't a festival with a front gate. Bike week is the whole Grand Strand — bars, dealerships, the Boulevard — and all of it is open. You ride in, you park, you walk around. Nobody's charging you to exist here.

Most of the live music at the big venues doesn't have a cover charge either. You'll see the word FREE a lot this week, and for once it's true.

The rally runs twice a year

Spring rally in May, fall rally in late September into October. Fall is the mellower of the two — same venues, same roads, thinner crowds, better weather for riding. If you're reading this during rally week, welcome. If you're planning ahead, fall is the smart first-timer pick.

Know the four big venues

Everything revolves around four spots, all in Murrells Inlet:

• Spokes & Bones Saloon — only open during rallies. The main stage, the biggest crowds, the rally-week-only experience.
• Suck Bang Blow — the legendary one. Open year-round, goes full send during rally week.
• The Beaver Bar — Murrells Inlet institution, live music all week.
• Big T's Saloon — 3010 US-17 Business, Murrells Inlet. The local favorite that a lot of first-timers miss.

Plus the two dealerships, both open year-round: Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson and The Harley Shop at the Beach in North Myrtle Beach. During rally week both lots are shows in themselves.

The riding is the point

Ocean Boulevard at sunrise. The Waccamaw Neck through the moss-draped oaks. A full 120-mile Strand run from Little River to Georgetown. Traffic is real. Plan for it.

Murrells Inlet on a rally Saturday is a parking lot with live music. Ocean Boulevard crawls. That's not a complaint — it's the parade, and the parade is the point. But if you need to actually get somewhere, ride early. Weekday mornings are gold.

Where to stay

Book early — rally week fills up. Look for places with trailer parking and ground-floor rooms if you're hauling the bike. North Myrtle Beach and Surfside put you close to the action without the Boulevard chaos. Campgrounds along 17 work great if that's your style.

Money tips

• Food and drink are normal bar prices. Nothing's gouging you, but you're eating out for a week — budget for it.
• Bring cash. Some spots (like the Beaver Bar's famous Sunday breakfast) are cash only.
• The vendors are worth a lap. Parts, leather, patches, custom work — the vendor rows at the big venues are half the fun. Bring a little mad money.

Rider tips that actually matter

• South Carolina requires helmets for riders under 21. Wear one anyway.
• Fuel up before the backroads. Stations thin out west of Conway.
• Watch for sand in intersections and curves along Ocean Boulevard.
• Don't drink and ride. The cops are out, the traffic is thick, and your bike is your way home. No exceptions.

One more thing

Talk to people. Rally week runs on strangers becoming riding buddies by Thursday. Park the bike, grab a cold one, ask somebody where they're from. That's the whole thing.
